DataPoint: North America Tractor/Loader/Backhoes (TLBs)
Download PDFTractor/Loader/Backhoes are full-size machines that are three pieces of construction equipment combined into one: the tractor, the loader and the backhoe. These units are designed to tackle an array of construction and agricultural related activities.
Mini Tractor/ Loader/ Backhoes are compact machines that perform well for trenching, landscaping, and material handling. Units are configured with a front loader and rear backhoe attachment.
The small construction segment is predicted to increase the demand for TLBs due to the machine’s efficient use in material handling and digging applications. TLBs are efficient to use for digging applications and for material handling as well (it’s an all-in-one machine). TLBs are easy to operate, especially in limited spaces and are a versatile machine.

Market Share: With combined plant totals of 54%, Deere leads in production of TLBs in North America. In second position is Case New Holland with 45%; third, is Kubota with 1%.
Export: Up to 35% worldwide.
Trends: In 2022, production of Tractor/Loader/Backhoes in North America increased nearly 1%. From 2022-2023 production is expected to climb another 2%. This segment rebounded 57% from 2020-2021 from the 41% prior year decline.
The decline was attributed to weak demand for TLBs due to cost and the effectiveness of mini excavators as being a much more profitable tool than the backhoe loaders along with Covid-19 related factors. The COVID-19 global pandemic made 2020 a very challenging year across most industries, including the production of construction equipment in North America.
The off-highway segments (agricultural, construction and industrial) all saw dramatic production declines in 2020 compared to 2019. The decline also was caused by lower shipment volumes and foreign-currency exchange issues along with JCB redirecting manufacturing back to the UK.
Production will remain flat then steadily increase over the next five years. The increase: TLBs are still a significant selling pieces of construction machinery and will remain a popular machine. Expect production to gain an additional 5% by 2025.

From 2021-2022, production of Battery Electric TLB decreased 46.1%. Production dropped 100% from 2022-2023. Case model 580 EV has been discontinued. Production started in 2020. PSR

Download PDFJet Drive Boats are boats propelled by a jet of water ejected from the back of the craft; they have no propeller and can maneuver in shallow water. PWCs are also driven by jet water and come in several styles: Stand-Ups or Sit-Downs. They are often referred to as jet skis. Sit Downs are designed for one, two or three persons in a sitting position, one in front of the other. PWC Stand-Ups are designed for one rider standing or kneeling on the watercraft.

Market Share: Yamaha leads in production of PWC in North America with a combined plant total of 48%. In second position is Bombardier with 40.5%; third, is Kawasaki with 10.5%.
Export: Collectively, up to 30% worldwide.
Trends: In 2022, production of PWCs gained nearly 8.5% over 2021. Production is expected to drop 4% from 2022-2023. The increase in 2022 was based on high demand for recreational items, including Personal Watercraft and jet drive boats.
Even though sales skyrocketed in 2022, PWC builders experienced supply chain disruptions during the pandemic that impacted deliveries for calendar year 2021. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), this trend is here to stay – the boating industry is booming with demand at an all-time high as Americans plan for a summer on the water. As the country returns to a new normal, people are reassessing how they spend their quality time with loved ones, and many are continuing to choose boating as the preferred choice in recreation. Sales of these recreational vehicles depend on disposable income and leisure time. Expect the production of Personal Watercraft to gain an additional 10% by 2025.
Battery Electric. Taiga Motors (Canada) produced electric PWC in 2021 (137 units). The company produced the same number in 2022, but electric production is expected to drop to about 125 units in 2023. PSR

DATAPOINT: NA Mixers, 2023 Production
Download PDFMixers are used by a variety of industries, especially for construction applications, and mix an assortment of materials. Power Systems Research tracks the North American production of two types of mixers: one used to produce asphalt and one for mixing mortar or concrete. Asphalt Mixers/Agitators are used to manufacture asphalt, macadam and other forms of coated road stone, often called “blacktop.”
A Cement/Mortar Mixer is a mechanical mixer that uses rotating paddles attached to a horizontal axle to blend the mix ingredients of mortar or concrete.

Battery/Corded Electric Units: Production of electric units are expected to increase by 23% in 2023 over 2022, climbing 1,300 units to about 6,800 units this year powered by either battery or cords. Q2 2023 Truck Production Index (PSR-TPI) gains 9.4%
Download PDFSt. Paul, MN — The Power Systems Research Truck Production Index (PSR-TPI) increased from 106 to 116, or 9.4%, for the three-month period ending June 30, 2023, from Q1 2023. The year-over-year (Q2 2022 to Q2 2023) gain for the PSR-TPI was, 112 to 116, or 3.6%.
The PSR-TPI is a quarterly truck production report that measures global truck production in six regions: North America, China, Europe, South America, Japan and Korea and Emerging Markets.

This data comes from OE Link™, the proprietary database maintained by Power Systems Research. The next update of the Power Systems Research TPI will be in October 2023 and will reflect changes in the TPI during Q3 2023. PSR

DATAPOINT: NA Off-Highway Trucks 2023 Production
Download PDFUnlike On-Road Trucks, Off-Highway Trucks are specifically designed to work in punishing environments and are made to haul material and debris around a work site. These purpose-built vehicles are not constrained by the weight limits of their smaller on-road counterparts.
Expect production to increase 5% by 2025 as the need for new equipment for mining operations increases. It is speculated that there will be growth in the excavation of iron ore, nickel and bauxite followed by gold and copper. PSR
