2023 NA Production: Graders
Download PDFA Grader is a piece of heavy equipment used to level or smooth roads or other surfaces. Also referred to as a Road Grader or a Motor Grader.
Production of Graders in the United States (NA) increased 3.2% in 2022 over 2021. Production is expected to gain nearly 4% in 2023. Prior year declines were attributed to Tier 4 pre-buying incentives and the lull for activities that utilize graders that are predominately road related.
This product information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.
Market Share: With 57.5% of total units produced, Deere leads in production of Graders in NA. In second position with combined plant totals is Caterpillar with 29%. VT LeeBoy takes third with 1.5%.
Trends: Motor graders have a long-life, and, as a result, new machinery is not always necessary, even though construction related activities focusing on aggregate activities are ongoing. Motor graders are utilized worldwide to build and maintain roads, highways, airport, and other construction projects. These machines increase productivity and are extremely efficient. Expect production to increase up to 10% by 2025. PSR

Q3 2023 Power Systems Research Truck Production Index (PSR-TPI) Climbs 3.6%
Download PDFSt. Paul, MN — The Power Systems Research Truck Production Index (PSR-TPI) climbed from 104 to 108, or 3.6%, for the 12 months ended Sept. 30, 2023. The PSR-TPI dropped from 117 to 108, or 7.7%, for the three-month period ending Sept. 30, 2023, from Q2 2023.
The PSR-TPI is a quarterly truck production report that measures global truck production in six regions: North America, China, Europe, South America, Japan and Korea and Emerging Markets.
This data comes from OE Link™, the proprietary database maintained by Power Systems Research. The next update of the Power Systems Research TPI will be in January 2024 and will reflect changes in the TPI during Q4 2023. PSR

Production climbed sharply in 2022, increasing by 24,686 units, or 14.6%, from 2021. We expect production to climb in 2023 as well, growing by about 3,725 units or 2%.
This product information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.
Market Share: With 58% of total units produced, Honda leads in production of Scooters in NA. In second position is Italika with 42%. Third is US-based Go-Ped with 225 units.
Applications:
- Honda manufactures scooters that include models Cruising 125, DIO110, Elite Series, ADV150, PCX150, Ruckus & Metropolitan. NAVI (motorcycle crossover) produced at the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan.
- Italika manufactures a complete line up of scooters (motoneta) for industry related needs.
- Go-Ped manufactures a variety of gas scooters (12 models plus 2 electric).
Trends: In 2022, production of Scooters in NA increased 14.6%. It is expected that production will gain nearly 2% in 2023. Despite Honda having record lows in 2020, production at Honda has rallied in subsequent years, as it has at Italika. Honda reported 2020 sales of only 47,851 units, down more than 5 million units or 24% from 2019, but rallied in 2021 to post scooter sales of 90,128 units.
Increased demand for efficient and eco-friendly models will boost the electric scooter market along with the threat of rising gas prices. Not only are scooters convenient and offer independence, but they also provide faster commutes as opposed to using other modes of transportation; electric models are also extremely popular. Expect production of scooters to increase 15% by 2025.

DataPoint: North America Tractor/Loader/Backhoes (TLBs)
Download PDFTractor/Loader/Backhoes are full-size machines that are three pieces of construction equipment combined into one: the tractor, the loader and the backhoe. These units are designed to tackle an array of construction and agricultural related activities.
Mini Tractor/ Loader/ Backhoes are compact machines that perform well for trenching, landscaping, and material handling. Units are configured with a front loader and rear backhoe attachment.
The small construction segment is predicted to increase the demand for TLBs due to the machine’s efficient use in material handling and digging applications. TLBs are efficient to use for digging applications and for material handling as well (it’s an all-in-one machine). TLBs are easy to operate, especially in limited spaces and are a versatile machine.

Market Share: With combined plant totals of 54%, Deere leads in production of TLBs in North America. In second position is Case New Holland with 45%; third, is Kubota with 1%.
Export: Up to 35% worldwide.
Trends: In 2022, production of Tractor/Loader/Backhoes in North America increased nearly 1%. From 2022-2023 production is expected to climb another 2%. This segment rebounded 57% from 2020-2021 from the 41% prior year decline.
The decline was attributed to weak demand for TLBs due to cost and the effectiveness of mini excavators as being a much more profitable tool than the backhoe loaders along with Covid-19 related factors. The COVID-19 global pandemic made 2020 a very challenging year across most industries, including the production of construction equipment in North America.
The off-highway segments (agricultural, construction and industrial) all saw dramatic production declines in 2020 compared to 2019. The decline also was caused by lower shipment volumes and foreign-currency exchange issues along with JCB redirecting manufacturing back to the UK.
Production will remain flat then steadily increase over the next five years. The increase: TLBs are still a significant selling pieces of construction machinery and will remain a popular machine. Expect production to gain an additional 5% by 2025.

From 2021-2022, production of Battery Electric TLB decreased 46.1%. Production dropped 100% from 2022-2023. Case model 580 EV has been discontinued. Production started in 2020. PSR
