  • DATAPOINT: NA ATV 2023 Production

288,000 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number of ATVs to be produced in North America in 2023.

ATV is a short term for All Terrain Vehicle. It commonly has 4 wheels and is designed to be driven off road. It seats one person, or sometimes two, one in front of the other.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: With 28% of total units produced, Polaris leads in the production of 4-wheeled ATVs in North America.  In second position and third position are Honda and Yamaha Motor with 22% and 18.5%, respectively.

Export: Mexico exports up to 45% of its production worldwide. The United States exports up to 30% of its production worldwide. Approximately 60% of Suzuki’s production in Rome, GA, remain in the US, while the rest are sold internationally.

Trends: In 2022, production of ATVs in North America decreased nearly 5% from 2021.  However, production is expected to rebound 5% in 2023.  The 2022 decrease was partially COVID-19 related. Other factors included overstock, the uncertain economic outlook, and the growing popularity of side x side units (utility vehicles).

Manufacturers have discontinued less popular models/variants and are concentrating on bestselling units.  ATVs are used in many activities that meet recreation, sport and military needs.

Investor relations representatives from Yamaha, Polaris Industries and Arctic Cat forecast increased sales, based on rising consumer discretionary spending and favorable gas prices.  Production is expected to increase, considering current economic factors along with the introduction of innovative products and technologies.  Look for additional production up to 10% by 2025.   PSR

  • Compact Track Loaders Eat into US Skid Steer Market

The past decade has seen compact track loaders (CTLs) eat into the market share held by skid steer loaders in the US, before overtaking sales of their wheeled counterparts completely. In 2012, there were 36,125 skid steer loaders sold in North America, compared to 21,500 sales of compact track loaders. By 2022, that number had jumped to 93,000 compact track loader sales, compared to 30,000 skid steer sales.

    NORTH AMERICA REPORT
    Chris Fisher
    Chris Fisher

Cummins plans to introduce their agnostic ICE engine platforms with testing to begin in 2024 and series production to start in the 2026/2027 timeframe.  The engine platforms use a common base engine.  Below the head gasket the engines will mostly have similar components and above the head gasket the engine will have different components for different fuel types.  The new platforms will include the B6.7, X10 and the X15 engines.  The X10 will ultimately supersede the current L9 and X12 engine platforms.

In North America, Cummins plans to introduce the agnostic engine platforms starting in 2026.  Diesel and natural gas will be the first fuel types introduced and hydrogen versions will soon follow.

  • Charging Infrastructure Blocks BEV Growth

    NORTH AMERICA REPORT
    Chris Fisher
    Chris Fisher

According to John O’Leary President and CEO of DTNA, charging infrastructure is the greatest barrier to adoption for battery electric heavy trucks.  Speaking to journalists in Las Vegas, he said customers are happy with the electric vehicles they have received but they are unable to expand their fleets with additional electric vehicles primarily due to the lack of charging infrastructure.

“Overwhelmingly, infrastructure is slowing us down in terms of EV deployment,” said Daimler Truck North America President and CEO John O’Leary. “Site prep, permitting, and construction delays all contribute to deployment times being measured in years, not weeks or months.”

“There’s a lot of will in the regulatory and political arenas to make that happen, but when you start talking about moving large megawatt lines of electricity around and building new substations, it just takes time,” he said.

  • DATAPOINT: NA Dumpers/Tenders, 2023 Production

1,790 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number of Dumpers/Tenders to be produced in North America (United States and Canada) in 2023.

A Dumper/Tender is a vehicle designed for carrying bulk material, often on building sites. Dumpers are distinguished from dump trucks by configuration: a dumper is usually an open 4-wheeled vehicle with the load skip in front of the driver, while a dump truck has its cab in front of the load.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: With 66% of total units produced, Country Home Products leads in production of Dumpers/Tenders in North America. In second position is Allen Engineering with 18%; third, is Indy Equipment with 10%.

Electric (Battery) Data: Manufacturers continue to develop battery-powered equipment to replace units powered by diesel and gasoline powered internal combustion engines.

    2021:  103 battery-powered units

    2022:  108 battery-powered units

    2023:  132 battery-powered units

From 2021-2023 production of Electric (Battery) powered units gained nearly 5%.

In 2023,  production is expected to gain 22%.

Trends: In 2022, production of Dumpers/Tenders in NA increased 9% over production volume in 2021.  Expect production to increase 7% in 2023 from that of 2022.  The increase is attributed to gains in the global economy along with the demand for new products for construction and mining related activities.

The decline in 2020 was attributed to product saturation in the market and somewhat related to COVID-19 shutdowns, despite the fact that consumers/contractors were still purchasing products.

To date, many manufacturers are having longer production lead times due to lack of parts from suppliers and staffing shortages. Dumper/Tenders, commonly referred to as a Power Buggy, are sought after pieces of equipment because they are much faster than a conventional wheelbarrow and their use accelerates job site related activities.  Expect production to increase an additional 5% by 2025.PSR
