  • Deutz and Daimler Form Strategic Alliance

    EUROPEAN REPORT

Daimler Truck and Deutz have entered a strategic partnership to manufacture engines.  Under the plan, Daimler Truck acquires 4.19% of the shares in Deutz AG, in return for which Deutz pays for access to Daimler Truck internal combustion engines.

The move is a consequence of Daimler’s decision to stop investing in the development of their medium duty engines (MDEG Series) from 5.1 to 7.7 Litres.  At the same time, Deutz will be able to access Daimler technology and further develop it for off-road applications, such as construction and agriculture machinery. The heavy-duty engines will continue to be manufactured by Daimler Truck at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim and be delivered to Deutz to complete the engine system.   Production of the medium-duty engines is expected to take place at Deutz in 2028.

Ballard Power Systems has announced the sale of 25 hydrogen fuel cell engines to repeat customer Solaris Bus & Coach, a leading European bus manufacturer.

The 70kW fuel cells will be installed in Solaris’ Urbino 12 hydrogen buses for deployment to Polish public transport operator MPK Poznań and are expected to be delivered in H2 2023.

The buses are to be partially funded by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management’s Green Public Transport program. MPK Poznań requires 30% of its fleet to be zero-emission by 2028. These 25 hydrogen fuel cell buses will increase its zero-emission fleet from 18% to 25%.

  • Smaller Bauma Returns To Munich

Summary. After more than three years, Bauma, one of the largest construction events in the world, reopened its doors for seven days in Munich Oct. 24. Power Systems Research (PSR) had a five-person team at the event, discussing trends with industry representatives, from new products and services to topics around the future evolution of sustainable technologies.

The show was smaller than the last time it was held, in 2019. Close to 3,200 exhibitors from 60 countries (2019: 3,684 exhibitors from 63 countries) participated and more than 495,000 visitors from over 200 countries (2019: 627,603 visitors from more than 200 countries) came to Munich for the event.

Bauma is the world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment. International visitors made up about 50% of the attendance. That’s a change from 2019 when about two-thirds of visitors came from Germany.

  • 100,000th lithium-Ion Forklift for Jungheinrich

    EUROPE REPORT

    Emiliano Marzoli

German OEM Jungheinrich has accomplished a remarkable goal, delivering its 100,000th lithium-Ion Forklift truck.  An ETV 216i Reach truck was the star of this milestone, with 15 other identical models delivered to the Amazon warehouse in Leipzig.

In 2011, Jungheinrich was the world’s first industrial truck manufacturer to launch a series-produced truck with a lithium-ion battery. Since then, lithium-ion technology has become the fastest-growing battery technology for industrial trucks.

PSR Analysis: According to Jungheinrich, compared to a diesel truck of the same performance class, an electric truck with a lithium-ion battery emits less than half the CO2 during its entire lifetime, including its manufacture. By using electricity from renewable energy sources, the CO₂ emissions of the vehicles in operation can be reduced by up to 90%.  It is not a surprise to see the increase of battery electric trucks in the European production mix.

  • Sustainability, Reliability Keys for Future e-Mobility Solutions

STUTTGART, Germany— One critical trend emerged during my conversations with many industry players at the Battery Show Europe and the Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo Europe here last month: Battery thermal management is an important element in EV development and operations.

I attended the Battery Show Europe here June 27-30 with Dalibor Sablic, PSR senior business development manager-Europe.

An estimated 6,000 attendees walked the floor to discuss products and services with nearly 600 exhibitors at the show. There was a positive energy and outlook for the future of the e-mobility industry, a refreshing change in atmosphere following many quiet months caused by the COVID pandemic.

During the show, I had an opportunity to meet with representatives of Dow and learn about the wide array of products and services the company is developing for the e-mobility segment.

  • Volvo CE Pushing Alternative Powertrains

    EUROPE REPORT

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has started testing its prototype “HX04” Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Articulated truck.  Carolina Diez Ferrer, Head of Advanced Engineering Programs at Volvo CE expects that this prototype will “give valuable insights into the opportunities of hydrogen in the energy transformation alongside battery-electric solutions.”

The on-going development of the hauler began in 2018 and experienced partnerships with different Swedish institutions and companies.  Fun fact: The machine is nicknamed “Electric Charlie,” a homage to “Gravel Charlie,” the world’s first Articulated hauler produced by Volvo in 1966.

Shell has been involved in the project, supplying the Hydrogen refuelling station for Volvo’s test track.  The Volvo HX04 is charged with 12 kg hydrogen in about 7.5 minutes, enabling it to operate for approximately four hours. Fuel cells work by combining hydrogen with oxygen and the resulting chemical reaction produces electricity which powers the machine.

  • Middle East Energy Show Is Back Live

    EUROPE REPORT

    Emiliano Marzoli
    Emiliano Marzoli

The last two years have seen a turnaround in the global economy and the way of doing business.  Many habits have changed, and trade shows were severely impacted by the pandemic.  For 2022, however the MEE is back live in Dubai.  The floor plan has been reduced, removing roughly half of the space used in previous edition.  This is not a surprise considering that the show was not busy in 2020, with many last-minute withdrawals, and that it was cancelled…

  • Kohler Engines Introduces Small Diesel

    EUROPE REPORT
    PowerTALK, January 2022

Kohler Engines has introduced a new series of small diesel engines: the KSD.  At launch three models will be available:

    • KSD 1403NA (Naturally aspirated)
    • KSD 1403TC (Turbocharged)
    • KSD 1403TCA (Turbocharged with aftercooler)

Later on, more variants will be released, completing further the series.  Developed as a new electronic engine, this platform is capable of meeting all current emissions legislations, globally.  All engines sit in the critical below 19 kW power node, and with 1.4L is a compact solution that can fit different applications.

One key aspect of the engine is the specific blend between indirect injection and electronic control.  According to Kohler, this enables maximum engine performance, response and very low-end torque.

The CE 04 falls somewhere between a maxiscooter and a light electric motorcycle, with a distinguished concept style.  Initially, the rated power will be 42 Hp, giving the CE 04 a 2.6 seconds to 50km/h and 120 km/h max speed.   A second model will be soon available with 31 Hp, with slower acceleration but similar top speed.

Acceleration won’t be the only difference.  The battery in the faster model will be bigger, with 8.9 kWh of capacity and is rated for up to 130 km (81 miles) of range. The reduced power model has a maximum range of 100 km (62 miles).  It will be possible to charge the bike under different circumstances, at home, or public places.  Two built-in chargers will be available, ranging from 2.3 kW to 6.9 kw.  Charging will take from 1 hour and forty minutes to 4 hours depending on the selected option.  BMW said that 20 to 80% battery charge will take 45 minutes, making this a very practical vehicle.
