More than 600 exhibitors from the marine pleasure industry showed off their latest models of boats, yachts, marine equipment and other products and services at the 47th annual Cannes Yachting Festival, Europe’s biggest in-water event, just closed its doors. The event ran Sept. 10-15.

An estimated 50,000 visitors attended the festival and got an excellent note for organization from all participants and visitors. The next year’s edition will be held Sept. 9-14, 2025.

The electric marine market has been very dynamic in the last 10 years and electric products and accessories were very popular at the show. Investments in research and development of new technologies and their implementation into boats have been extremely high.

Electric boats and yachts are, as expected, more expensive than traditionally powered boats but in the long term they produce savings on fuel and maintenance. The electric boats boating benefits are still unknown to the large public and need promotion.

Many electric and hybrid boat and equipment manufacturers that we talked with at the show confirm that the market is growing but slower than they had been hoping. The EU regulations for CO2 emission reduction in inland and open water, development of infrastructure in marinas, better technologies, safety and capacity of batteries, are still challenging battle fields.

We estimate that the electrification of the marine pleasure industry will have a positive trend in coming years. This year growth is estimated to 15% compared to 2023. The years approaching 2030 will bring more opportunities in pleasure segments as popularization of the new style and sustainable boating is seriously taking place in Europe and abroad. The expected growth of the market is up to 20% year by year. The acceleration of the electrification will be probably possible from 2030 when Green Fuels and technologies will be available to replace fossil fuel engines in boats of all types and sizes.

Well-known boat builders mainly coming from Poland and Turkey displayed 170 boats and yacht in size from 8 to 30 meters.  Eco-innovations and advanced propulsion systems were present more than ever. Traditionally powered boats and yachts dominated the show, but the electric and hybrid boats and yachts are gaining visibility and attracted extensive interest.

As usual, the biggest and the most impressive displays were those from the luxury motor yachts and super yachts manufacturers as of Azimut-Benetti, Sunseeker, San Lorenzo, Ferretti, Princess or FairlineGaleon, Cranchi, Sirena and other motor yachts builders continuously working on new boat models take up more space at the festival every year.

Motor yachts and superyachts adopt new designs offering a maximal open view to sea, more space and as much as possible sustainable yachting. Alternative fuel propulsion systems are not in application yet but some efforts supporting less polluting navigation in marina are made. Tenders for superyachts are regularly equipped with an electric solution.

Motor yachts in size from to 20 to 24 meters are mainly equipped with diesel MAN or Volvo Penta inboard engines, superyachts require the MTU or Caterpillar powerful propulsion. Manufacturers of luxury sports cruisers from Europe and overseas countries have been present in a large number. Boats in size up to 20 meters are mainly equipped with Volvo Penta IPS or Mercury outboard engines.

Sailing boats and yachts manufacturers like Beneteau, Hanse Yachts, Dufour, Bavaria Yachts, X-Yachts, Nautor Swan, Gunboat, Outremer, Solaris, CNB, Grand Soleil, Fountaine Pajot, and others are looking for innovations in design and material to gain in space and light and to get closer to eco responsible yachting.

French Fountaine Pajot is developing an electric/hybrid option for existing models (odsea LAB project). Sailing catamarans Lagoon and Bali, remain the bestselling yachts at the show. Charter companies’ purchase catamarans massively produced globally to satisfy a growing demand. Australian Seawind catamaran is entering European market with the new model fully manufactured in recently launched shipyard in Turkey. Sailing yachts and catamarans are powered by Yanmar sail drive engines.

Electric and hybrid boats and yacht manufacturers including Candela, Wider, Whisper, Silent Yachts, Greenline, Sunreef, Frauscher, Elan, Vaan, Windelo, HH Catamarans, X-Yachts, Axopar, Lumen Yachts, de Antonio Yachts, and others, created lots of interest at the festival. They are using safe and reliable propulsion systems built in partnership with the most advanced electric and hybrid propulsion systems and components manufacturers such as Evoy, Huracan, Torqeedo, OceanVolt, MG energy, BMW, Polestar, ePropulsion, e-Motion, Danfoss, etc. They are promoting slow, silent and eco-responsible boating.

Fossil fuel engine manufacturers such as of Rolls-Royce/MTU, MAN, Cummins, Yanmar International, Volvo Penta, FPT Industry, Moteurs Boudouin presented their improved engines and propulsion systems for yachts. They are working on upgrading the existing engines to respond to the latest emission standards requirements worldwide. New fuel technologies development is in progress, but it is not expected to be implemented in yachts before 2035.

Yanmar launched a new sail drive electric engine in collaboration with the battery manufacturer MG Energy. Three models SDe7, SDe10 and SDe15- give an output of up to 15 kW for 100% emission free sailing.  Mercury launched the electric outboard motor line Avator with power from 7.5 to 110 kW. Torqeedo presented the latest inboard electric motor Deep Blue 100i with a power of 100 kW (135 hp) and the new XP Travel outboard electric motor with the power of 5 hp for inland boating. The high-performant Deep Blue Battery 80 based on BMW technology is launched at the festival. BlueNav invented a retractable electric motor for cleaner navigation for new or existing boats having a diesel engine(s).

Among large motor yachts, luxury superyachts, motor and sailing catamarans, outboard boats, RIB’s and other types of boats equipped with one or more fossil fuel engines, the fully electric boats, motor and battery manufacturers drew plenty of attention from attendees.

The Power Systems Research team spoke with exhibitors about their latest creations, and current market trends. Here are some experiences and thoughts from the field.

The Swedish builder Candela is a pioneer in a hydrofoiling electric boat production. After many years of research and development, the first model C-7 was launched in 2019. The latest model C-8 designed in partnership with Polstar was launched in 2023. 25 units of the C-8 design have been delivered. This year’s plan is to double production. The leisure market shows a positive trend. Candela heavily invested in the creation of the ferry C-12 having a capacity of 31 persons as the commercial segment has shown great interest in CO2 free boating.  Six units of ferries are sold and are in production. They will be used for urban transportation on the lakes.

Whisper Yachts fully designs and manufactures solar powered electric boats in Italy. The first Whisper 50, the 15 meters in lengths boat was presented at the show. It is equipped with two Torqeedo engines of 100 kW and three BMW batteries totaling 240 kWh. The boat is designed for slow, silent and clean long-distance boating. The company is launching a new Whisper 40 model in 2025. The model Whisper 60 is also coming soon.

Lumen is the Dutch electric day boat brand launched in 2018. The first E32 model has been replaced by the spacious and stylish E10 model. They are built by JR yachts in the Netherlands. The propulsion system is based on the motor built in-house and using MG batteries. Six units have been delivered, primarily to boat clubs. The Lumen team is promoting slow, comfortable and responsible boating in the leisure market. Having a traditional elegant style but being modern and different in propulsion, the E10 attracted a lot of attention at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Evoy, the Norway manufacturer of electric inboard and outboard motors, batteries and chargers, started collaboration with the Finnish outboard boat manufacturer Axopar two years ago. The fast-growing brand manufactures about 3500 units of outboard boats per year and is now focusing on sustainable boating. The new AX/E line offers two models of electric boats AX/25 and AX/22 equipped by Evoy electric motors Storm 300+ and Outboard Brees 120+, respectively. The Evoy propulsion systems allow charging batteries from 10% to 80% in 45 minutes. Axopar sees double-digit growth of the electric market in the coming years.

Huracan Marine, the Italian manufacturer of inboard, sterndrive, sail drive and outboard electric motors and batteries, produces products primarily for builders of electric yachts and tenders, such as Silent Yachts. However, larger scale sales are expected to come from the commercial segment. The transition of Venetians traditional water traffic canal boats and privately owned boats to non-fossil engines powered boats should be implemented by 2028. This and other environmental projects directed by the state and municipality administration open new opportunities for business development.

MG Energy Systems presented the latest versions of its battery systems developed for boats and yachts of Ferretti Spa, Wajer Yachts, Azimut Benetti, Garcia Yachts, Elan, Dragonfly, Windelo, Vaan and others. PSR

General Observations. The core topics at HANNOVER MESSE included artificial intelligence, hydrogen, energy management, connected and intelligent production, and the new Manufacturing-X data ecosystem.

More than 4,000 exhibitors presented their solutions and welcomed 130,000 visitors from around the globe. There seemed to be a very large Chinese contingent at the show (both as visitors and exhibitors), as well as a large number of local governments, universities and startups. There seemed to be a predominance of exhibitors showing bearings, copper fittings, cables and components as well as systems / electronics companies.

There was also a large number of independent robots in evidence, ranging from robotic dogs and robotic servers to robotic messengers following pre planned routes.

The Exhibition site was huge with each hall easily taking at least 1.5 to 2 hours to walk thoroughly.

Selected Companies. More than 4,000 companies exhibited their products at the show, but we thought these few had products that were especially interesting.

Eikto is a Chinese company based in Xuancheng (Anhui Province) and which is situated approximately 150km west of Shanghai. Their products are mainly suited to Material Handling Equipment, Golf-Buggy, Aerial work Platform, Cleaning Equipment and small marine applications.

They had a small stand showing their Battery Cells (in different sizes) (see Picture 1) and their new Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (Picture 2 &3). They weren’t to open about the size of the Battery pack but I would estimate its between 10kWh and 20kWwh

Delta is a Dutch company with a global presence (Netherlands, Taiwan, USA, Australia, Japan, Singapore, India, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines) that specializes in EV chargers. It was one of a number of companies with EV chargers on display.

It also made a big issue about retrofitting older buildings with chargers.

Wilo. The Wilo Group is a multinational technology group and a supplier of pumps and pump systems for building services, water management and the industrial sector. It has also used its expertise to move into Hydrogen.

Their H2POWERPLANT uses electrolysis to convert green solar, wind and hydropower into green hydrogen. When it’s needed, a fuel cell can then be used to convert the hydrogen back into electrical energy. The waste heat is either used in the interconnected system for heating, stored or converted into cooling on site. This sustainable use of all released energy optimises system efficiency. The process relies on the precise configuration of the water-bearing systems in addition to intelligent control of energy and load management.

The 20ft container includes all the components necessary to generate hydrogen and fuel cells to convert it into electricity. The storage of H2 is in a separate 20ft container

MTU is a regular at most trade shows and their stand was fairly small (smaller than at Bauma). They were mainly displaying their Fuel Cell package.

Auyan. Established in June 2011, and located in Weifang City, Shandong Province, Auyan New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. specializes in manufacturing cryogenic equipment. As an offshoot of this they have developed their own Hydrogen electrolysis and storage equipment

Their mobile electrolysis machine manufactures approximately 1m cubed of hydrogen per hour. They have larger versions too.

Accelera (Cummins) had a small display under their new related business name, Accelera. Accelera is the new brand for Cummins’ New Power business segment, it launched March 8, 2023. Accelera is an energy technology leader committed to securing a sustainable future for the industries that keep the world running. A diverse portfolio of zero-emissions solutions includes battery systems, fuel cells, ePowertrain systems and electrolyzers

Others. Some of the university stands had very interesting displays. One was a fuel cell powered bike with a thermos like device on the left for fuel. A lower box holds the fuel cell and the upper box holds a small battery.

Golz is a medium sized, family run company that specializes in handheld and small portable equipment for construction sites (table drills, power saws, drills, etc).  They have a long term relationship with Stihl and make some of the Stihl products.

They have branched out into providing power packs for small construction sites. One product shown was a power bank that has 4.8 kwh. The business idea is that a small contractor takes one or two of these power banks to his site, uses them and recharges over night.

Pre-Zero is a plastics recycling company that was founded in 2009 under the name GreenCycle. It originated from a department in waste disposal logistics of Lidl.  PreZero, are now the environmental division of the Schwarz Group with 485 locations worldwide and over 30,000 employees.    PSR

    Show Report: Expotransporte 2022

Editor’s Note: This report includes a conversation with Miguel Elizalde Lizárraga, the executive president of ANPACT (the National Association of Bus, Truck and Engine Manufacturers) and a visit to the Expotransporte 2022, the largest truck show in Latin America.

    Lorena Violante
    Lorena Violante

ANPACT represents the trucks, buses and engine manufacturers in Mexico. It participates actively with government organizations and other important related associations to ensure the truck and bus industry gets enough support, incentives, alliances, agreements and information to grow in the local market. Also, to continue with their outstanding role as one of the most important exporters of heavy duty vehicles globally.

The ANPACT gathers the most important trucks, buses and engine manufacturers in Mexico such as Kenworth, Freightliner, International, Mercedes Benz, Man, Volkswagen, Scania, Dina, Mack, Volvo, Isuzu, Hino, Detroit and Cummins.

During our conversation, Elizalde provided timely insights into the Mexican transportation industry and the major market challenges this country is facing today.

    Chris Fisher
    Chris Fisher

Vehicles manufactured in Mexico produce an important impact on the country’s economy, logistics and mobility. For example, 71% of the foreign trade value is moved to the US through heavy duty trucks. Much of the movement of goods in Mexico is through trucks, and people use buses as their main transportation.

According to ANPACT´s August statistics, manufacturers produced a total of 127,858 heavy duty vehicles from January through August this year. This is 18% more than 2021 production. Through August, export volumes increased by 15.7% (106,824 units) compared to 2021. Retail demand has increased so far by 20.5% (25,196 units).

Current challenges the transportation industry is facing today in Mexico include road safety, environmental regulations implementation, supply chain lead times, driver shortage, e-commerce, vehicles renewals, safety and energy infrastructure.

    Key Mexican Market Challenges

Road Mobility and Safety. There´s a new mobility and safety road  law designed to reduce the negative social impacts (inequality, economic, health and environmental) with the objective of also reducing road accidents and deaths. This law became effective in May 2022, and is being implemented in different states.

Environmental Regulations. The next change in Mexico on environmental regulations will be the EPA10/EUROVI on Dec. 1, 2025. However, the timely implementation of this regulation depends mainly on the availability of ultra-low sulfur diesel and the government environmental approvals to implement it.

Supply Chain Crisis. The effects and disruption on supply chains caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the cargo ship crisis and the Russian-Ukraine war have made components delivery times much longer, from one or two months to six months and more. This situation applies to semiconductors and many other parts. It is expected that some companies could solve this problem by the end of this year and many others will solve the problem next year.

Operator Shortage. There is a global shortage of drivers, not only in the US and Mexico, but Mexico has a double problem. The shortage of drivers in Mexico is made worse because Mexican drivers are migrating to work some months in the US with a legal international license and with an authorized visa.

Vehicle Fleet Renewals. There´s not an existing culture to renew fleets in Mexico and there is no enforcement to retire old vehicles, so this is another challenge the country is facing today.

Energy Infrastructure. Mexico does not have enough ultra-low sulfur diesel. Also, there are only 65 public gas stations for vehicles, 9000 diesel stations and 38 electric stations (only 15 of them are used by HD vehicles, the rest are in other locations like parking lots).

    Expotransporte ANPACT 2022

Vehicles Using Alternative Power Sources Displayed

We visited ExpoTransporte in October in the state of Puebla. This show is the most important truck and bus show in Latin America. This show is equal in organization and quality to those held in Europe and the United States. It is a major venue where OEMs, suppliers, transportation companies and owner operators  meet to do business and create alliances. It´s a leading event to promote the transportation industry in the country.

While walking the show, we were able to see applied technologies such as diesel, natural gas, hybrids and electric options in vehicles. Some are already offered in the market and others are expected to be offered in the near future.

Isuzu. Showcased some of their EuroVI units to be offered in the market once the emission regulation comes in place to Mexico. This includes the ELF400Z (Euro VI, Urea) which is a 4 cylinder diesel engine; also the Forward 800 EURO VI (4Hk1tcs 6 cylinder diesel engine)

Kenworth. Exhibited current diesel models, like the T680 Next Gen available with a Cummins X15 or a Paccar MX-13. Also some of the new products that we could see were their mid-range 100% electric truck K270E made at their plant in Mexicalli which started to be sold in 2022 (so far exported to the US). Another model exhibited was the T380 CNG, a mid-range truck with a Cummins natural gas engine B6.7N

Volkswagen.  The manufacturer introduced the e-Delivery, their first electric truck 100% developed and made in Mexico and Brazil . It´s available in 11 and 14 tons

International. The LT model with a Cummins engine X15 Euro V/ VI available in 2023. Also presented the eMV and the eCE bus electric models

Shacman. A relatively new entrant in the Mexican market is Shacman. The Chinese manufacturer entered the Mexican market about two years ago. It´s led by Carlos Pardo, their managing director. They assemble some units today in the state of Hidalgo and have plans to expand their operation to a larger site. They exhibited their heavy duty trucks L3000 and X3000 powered by Cummins or Weichai engines. Shacman also offers trucks with natural gas engines.

Freightliner. This manufacturer presented the eCascadia and eM2, 100% electric heavy duty trucks powered by Detroit ePowertrain. Today, these units were exhibited as the first step towards an introduction in the country that will need a huge coordination between the manufacturer, the government and customers to make these trucks driving on the Mexican highways a reality.

Hino. Presented some of their current models like the Series 500 trucks, and also their latest  technologies like their hybrid Series 300 trucks (Models 516HV, 616HV and (816HV) and the new Series 200 trucks to be introduced in 2023 . Also exhibited were their new electric technologies with two models. The Hino Dutro Z EV was introduced this year in the Japanese market and still is not sold in Mexico. The other electric model is a prototype, which Hino intends to introduce to the Mexican market. Hino offers today a broad range in the Mexican market with about 30 models.

Cummins. Exhibited their X15 Euro VI engine with no EGR system.   PSR
