    The Bauma CHINA 2024 trade show, held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from November 26-29, showcased a significant evolution in the global construction machinery industry. The event expanded to 330,000 square meters, featuring 3,542 exhibitors from 32 countries and attracting 281,488 visitors from 188 nations, a remarkable recovery from the pandemic-impacted 2020 edition.

    This year’s exhibition highlighted trends such as electrification, sustainable technologies, digital innovations, and intelligent system integration. Chinese manufacturers like Dingli, LGMG, and Sinoboom demonstrated dominance, presenting groundbreaking products in new energy and hybrid solutions, while the presence of Western manufacturers was notably reduced.

    The trade show introduced dedicated zones for intelligent management and new energy technologies, reflecting a pivot toward green and digital solutions. Key product launches included electric and hybrid machinery, hydrogen-powered systems, and cutting-edge equipment from major players like Sany, XCMG, and Zoomlion.

    Conferences focused on sustainability, new energy collaborations, and digital transformation underscored the industry’s shift towards environmentally friendly practices and global market integration.   • China Restrictions Could Cause Antimony Shortfall

    China plans to introduce restrictions on antimony exports, a move that could lead to another flashpoint with the West over control of critical minerals.   • BYD Plans Factory in Turkey To Produce 150,000 Vehicles

    BYD has signed an agreement with the Turkish government to invest USD 1 Billion to build a factory in Turkey. This is BYD’s second factory in Europe following one built in Hungary. Under the agreement, BYD will build a factory and research and development center with an annual production of 150,000 vehicles. The factory is planned to start production by the end of 2026 and will provide job opportunities for up to 5,000 workers. The factory is expected to improve BYD’s logistics efficiency.

    The Turkish government is welcoming the factory construction of Chinese automotive enterprises and is holding discussions regarding factory construction are taking place with SAIC and Great Wall, as well as BYD and Chery. Previously, Turkey announced the cancellation of a plan to impose an additional 40% tariff on all vehicles from China, which was announced a month earlier, to encourage Chinese automotive enterprises to invest in Turkey.

  • European Batteries Could Be 60% Less Carbon Intensive Than Chinese

    Moving the EV supply chain to Europe would cut the emissions of producing a battery by 37% compared to a China-controlled supply chain, according to new analysis by lobbying  group Transport & Environment (T&E). This carbon saving rises to over 60% when renewable electricity is used.

    Securing other parts of the battery value chain will be even more challenging given China’s dominance and the EU’s limited expertise. The report finds Europe has the potential to manufacture 56% of its demand for cathodes – the battery’s most valuable components – by 2030, but only two plants have started commercial operations so far.

  • Battery Swap Alliance Seen as EV Recharging Solution

    Driven by multiple factors such as government support, market demand, and battery technology upgrades, the battery swap solution is attracting much attention from the market.

    NIO Energy has obtained a strategic investment of 1.5 billion yuan from Wuhan Guangchuang Xingxin Technology Phase I Venture Capital Fund Partnership and other institutions. Earlier, FAW Group signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with NIO[ it is the seventh car company to sign a battery swap cooperation agreement with NIO, following GAC Group, Changan Automobile, Geely Holding, Chery Automobile, Jianghuai Automobile Group, and Lotus. This covers almost half of the mainstream domestic car companies.

    Competition in the battery swap track involves more than just NIO and several passenger car companies. Recently, power battery enterprises, commercial vehicle companies, and mobility platforms also have been aggressively entering this field. On May 16, 2024, CATL signed a framework agreement for a battery swap project cooperation with GAC Aion and Era Electric Service; in the commercial vehicle sector, Nanjing Golden Dragon, Sany Automobile, China National Heavy-Duty Truck, Dongfeng Liuzhou, and Hanma Technology have all started to plan the layout of battery swap heavy trucks. In addition, State Power Investment, GCL New Energy, and Sany Group are also positioning to layout heavy truck battery swap stations.

  • Bosch China Establishes Commercial Vehicle Group

    Bosch Powertrain announced the establishment of a commercial vehicle group, aiming to strengthen cross-domain cooperation at the same time it introduced a new electronic pneumatic braking system and intelligent mobility solutions for commercial vehicles at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

    Bosch also has developed an advanced super thermal management system to address the thermal management challenges in the commercial vehicle industry. Bosch says it is optimistic about the development prospects of hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles and is actively promoting the adaptive development and promotion of related technologies.

    During the Beijing Auto Show, Wang Weiliang, the President of the Board of Bosch Intelligent Transportation Solutions China and the President of Bosch Powertrain Systems China, announced Bosch’s significant strategic initiatives for this year. Wang Weiliang said that China, as the world’s largest commercial vehicle market, is in a golden era of booming development for the commercial vehicle industry.

  • VW To Inject €2.5 billion into Hefei Base

    Facing intense competition in China’s new energy vehicle market, Volkswagen has decided to increase investment in its Hefei base. On April 11, Volkswagen announced an additional investment of €2.5 billion in its production and innovation center in Hefei to further strengthen its local R&D capabilities.

    It has been reported that this investment will also be used to accelerate the development and production of two Volkswagen brand smart electric vehicle models co-developed with Xiaopeng Motors. Volkswagen revealed that the first model, a mid-size SUV, is planned to enter production in 2026.
