Heavy Truck Sales Fall by More Than 60% in H1 2022

CHINA REPORT

The heavy truck industry fell in the first half of 2022 by more than 63% from the previous year. According to the latest statistics from the China Automobile Association, for January to June this year, the overall sales volume of the domestic heavy truck market was about 380,000 units, a decrease of 63.6% compared with the same period last year.

In June, the sales volume of China’s heavy truck industry was only 55,000 units, a year-over-year decrease of 65%. The main reasons for the decline in heavy truck sales this year are the upgrading of emission standard from “China V” to “China VI” last year, which caused a pre-buy in the market, and the impact of the epidemic this year, which depressed the logistics and transportation market, further curbing demand for new trucks.

The heavy truck industry is a cyclical industry, and its development cycle fluctuates due to changes in environmental protection policies and the overall economy. Following a 14 month decline in sales, the primary concern in the heavy truck industry is this: When will there be a turnaround?

India Bets on Green Hydrogen

INDIA REPORT
Aditya Kondejkar

The electric vehicle market in India is mostly dominated by lithium-ion battery technology, which powers two-, three- and four-wheeler vehicles. But this situation comes with its own set of challenges.

For instance, each battery chemistry has a different energy density, peak power output and charging time. Hence, the industry is working on alternative green solutions, and the government of India is aggressively working on hydrogen as a fuel option.

In terms of refueling time, hydrogen has a definitive advantage over batteries. It takes just a couple of minutes for a hydrogen vehicle to be refueled, irrespective of size, compared to the hours it takes to recharge an electric vehicle.

The union cabinet approved US$ 2.4 trillion (Rs 19,744 cr) for National Green Hydrogen Mission. The mission has four components aimed at enhancing domestic production of green hydrogen and promoting the manufacturing of electrolysers — a key constituent for making green hydrogen. The initial target is to produce 5 million tons of green hydrogen annually.

Along with the government, other industry stakeholders are taking significant steps to develop hydrogen fuel. Ashok Leyland (one of the largest CV makers) is working with Reliance industries on the development and supply chain of hydrogen-powered engines.

Ashok Leyland plans to install fuel-cell engines in an existing fleet of 45,000 trucks that RIL has hired to transport refined products and other marketing goods as a first stage in the strategy. Also, Adani (diversified business portfolio) and TotalEnergies (French energy and petroleum company) have entered into a partnership to jointly create the world’s largest green hydrogen ecosystem.

The potential of the country towards the production of hydrogen is attractive to many companies. European aircraft manufacturer Airbus is looking to source green hydrogen from India as well as Australia and Latin America.

“India is an amazing location with huge potential for the production of (green) hydrogen at a very exciting cost,” says Glenn Llewellyn, VP Zero-Emission Aircraft at Airbus.

In the 16th edition of the motor show Auto Expo Toyota, MG motors, Tata motors, Hyundai, and VECV,  showcased their hydrogen-powered vehicles across several segments. It’s evident that OEMs are seriously exploring the option of Hydrogen powered vehicles.   PSR

Deutz and Daimler Form Strategic Alliance

EUROPEAN REPORT
Emiliano Marzoli
Emiliano Marzoli

Daimler Truck and Deutz have entered a strategic partnership to manufacture engines.  Under the plan, Daimler Truck acquires 4.19% of the shares in Deutz AG, in return for which Deutz pays for access to Daimler Truck internal combustion engines.

The move is a consequence of Daimler’s decision to stop investing in the development of their medium duty engines (MDEG Series) from 5.1 to 7.7 Litres.  At the same time, Deutz will be able to access Daimler technology and further develop it for off-road applications, such as construction and agriculture machinery. The heavy-duty engines will continue to be manufactured by Daimler Truck at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim and be delivered to Deutz to complete the engine system.   Production of the medium-duty engines is expected to take place at Deutz in 2028.

DATAPOINT: NA Mixers, 2023 Production

34,000 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number of Mixers expected to be produced in the United States, Mexico and Canada in 2023.

Mixers are used by a variety of industries, especially for construction applications, and mix an assortment of materials. Power Systems Research tracks the North American production of two types of mixers: one used to produce asphalt and one for mixing mortar or concrete. Asphalt Mixers/Agitators are used to manufacture asphalt, macadam and other forms of coated road stone, often called “blacktop.”

A Cement/Mortar Mixer is a mechanical mixer that uses rotating paddles attached to a horizontal axle to blend the mix ingredients of mortar or concrete.

This product information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Battery/Corded Electric Units: Production of electric units are expected to increase by 23% in 2023 over 2022, climbing 1,300 units to about 6,800 units this year powered by either battery or cords. In 2023, electric units (battery and corded) will be about 2% of total North American Mixer production. PSR
