EU-US Trade Deal Threatens European Production
Emiliano Marzoli The EU-US trade agreement is facing intense criticism from European policymakers and industry leaders who deem it unbalanced, unfair, and a “significant policy mistake.” The persistence of high US tariffs and mounting non-tariff barriers are severely hurting Europe’s export-oriented industrial sector. Experts warn the deal has cornered the EU, increasing its dependency on critical raw materials and semiconductors.
Specifically, US Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminium derivatives are crippling the machinery sector with complex compliance rules. Failure to comply can trigger punitive tariffs up to 200%, prompting some firms to halt US exports entirely and leading to a sharp drop in sales (e.g., German machinery exports have fallen 18.5%). EU lawmakers are now pushing for amendments, including sunset clauses and safeguards, amid concerns that the current framework is unsustainable.

EPA Won’t Delay 2027 NOx Rule, Plans Changes
Chris Fisher The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is moving forward with the 2027 timeline for its heavy-duty NOx rule—currently set to take effect with the 2027 model year—but says changes are in store.
The American Trucking Associations (ATA), National Tank Truck Carriers, Truckload Carriers Association, and 49 state trucking associations in August penned a letter to EPA, asking the regulator to push implementation to 2031, citing “substantial compliance costs and operational burdens at a time when the trucking industry is already contending with historically difficult market conditions.”
Administrator Lee Zeldin in March announced that the EPA was reevaluating the Biden-era 2022 Heavy-Duty Engine and Vehicle rule that regulates oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and other emissions beginning with Model Year 2027.

Agritechnica 2025: The Rise of Smart, Hybrid Efficiency
Emiliano Marzoli The Agritechnica 2025 trade show, held under the guiding theme “Touch Smart Efficiency,” cemented the industry’s focus on integrating digital intelligence with advanced hardware to achieve higher yields while ensuring environmental and economic sustainability. The primary trend was the transition of alternative power and robotics from concepts into commercially available, high-performance machinery.
The 2025 show was bigger than the previous show in 2023–there were more attendees (476,000 vs. 470,000) and exhibitors (2849 vs 2812) and more countries represented (171 vs. 149). The total space for the two shows was the same–394,000 sq in 24 halls at the Hanover Exhibition Center in Hanover, Germany. The bi-annual show ran Nov. 9-15.

Brazil, Colombia Renew 2026 Free Trade Quota
Fabio Ferraresi Brazil and Colombia have agreed to extend for 12 months the bilateral automotive quota allowing duty-free export of up to 50,000 Brazilian vehicles per year. The mechanism, which had expired in September, risked reinstating a 16.1% import tariff on Brazilian ICE and flex-fuel passenger vehicles entering the Colombian market from 2025 onward. From January to September 2024, Colombia remained Brazil’s third-largest automotive export destination, receiving 38,500 units (+55.2% YoY), below but close to the annual quota.

J-ENG Launches Marine Engine Fueled by Ammonia
Akihiro Komuro Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has announced the completion of its first full-scale ammonia-fueled engine. The engine is due to be shipped to Japan Marine United (JMU)’s Ariake Works for installation on an ammonia-fueled ammonia carrier (AFMGC) which is currently under construction at the facility. The vessel is scheduled to enter service in November 2026.

PSR Analysis: J-ENG’s first domestically produced ammonia fuel engine is a significant milestone as Japan strives to lead the way in marine decarbonization technology. Ammonia emits no CO₂ during combustion, making it a strong candidate for alternative fuels under the stricter IMO GHG regulations.
