  • DATAPOINT: US Combines, 2020 NA Production Forecast–6,300 units

The 6,300 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number Combines to be produced in the U.S. in 2020.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: John Deere leads in the production of Combines in the U.S. with 59% of the total units manufactured. In second position is Case with 29%. Third, is Class with 6%.

Exports: Collectively, up to 30% worldwide.

Trends: In 2019, production of combines in North America decreased 7%.  Production in 2020 is forecasted to remain flat with a nominal drop of 1%.  Despite COVID-19, combine manufacturers expect to see an increase in sales due to the introduction of new equipment.

A few years ago, farmers were reluctant to buy or trade in pricey equipment because of low commodity prices.  For instance, in 2017, production and purchases of new combines rebounded as portrayed in production figures. The gain can be attributed to an increase in commodity prices such as corn and soybeans that peaked in 2013/2014.

According to industry reports such as AEM, export sales to Canada decreased 19% in 2019.  Expect production to remain flat with a possible gain of 5% by 2025.   PSR

  • DATAPOINT: 2020 NA Off-Highway Truck Production Forecast Is 1,200 Units

The 1,200 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number of Off-Highway Trucks to be produced in North America (Canada and the U.S.) in 2020.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: Caterpillar leads in the production of Off-Highway Trucks in North

America with 53% of the total units manufactured. In second position is Deere with 29.5%. Third, is Komatsu America with 15.5%.

Exports: Collectively, up to 20% worldwide.

Trends: Production of Off-Highway Trucks in North America decreased 1% in 2019 compared to 2018.  Production is expected to drop another 15% in 2020.  The decline in manufacturing is caused by the weakening of mining related activities, especially within the copper and gold segments along with overseas mining related issues.  At the same time, Covid-19 factors contributed to the decrease.

Expect production to increase 5% by 2025 as the need for new equipment for mining operations increases.  It is speculated that there will be growth in the excavation of iron ore, nickel and bauxite followed by gold and copper.  PSR

  • DataPoint. NA Tillers 2020 Forecast: 261,100 Units

The 261,100 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number of tillers to be produced in North America (Mexico and the U.S.) in 2020.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: With combined plant totals of 52%, MTD leads in production of tillers in North America. In second position is Schiller Grounds Care with 33%, and in third place is Honda Power with 5.5%.

Exports: Mexico exports up to 65% of its production, and the U.S. ships up to 35% of its production worldwide.

Trends: Production of Tillers in North America decreased nearly 16% in 2019, compared to 2018.  Production is expected to drop an additional 10% in 2020.  The decline is attributed to Husqvarna discontinuing their line of tillers along with a lull in demand for new products.

In recent years, there has been a steady demand for tillers in both the commercial and residential sectors.  Driven by an acceleration in GDP growth, consumers will be increasingly willing to spend their disposable incomes on durable goods, landscaping services, and recreational activities, thereby boosting demand for both consumer and commercial outdoor power equipment.

It’s possible that COVID-19 may cause a production decline, but this impact may be only minor because homeowners are keeping up their yards and creating flower beds, etc. Expect production to increase 10% by 2025.   PSR

  • DATAPOINT: US Lawn & Garden Tractors, 2020 Forecast: 681,500 Units

681,500 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number of Lawn & Garden Tractors to be produced in the United States in 2020.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: With 38% of total units produced, Husqvarna leads in production of Lawn & Garden Tractors in North America.  In second position, with combined plant totals, is MTD with 33%; third, also with combined plant totals, is Deere & Co. with 24%.

    Exports: Up to 25% worldwide.

Trends: In 2019, production of Lawn & Garden Tractors in North America (US) increased nearly 8%, but production is expected to drop 16% in 2020.  The gain in 2019 was the result of increased demand for new fuel-efficient models combined with the demand for new equipment.  Latest models offer a variety of features for home buyers based on yard size (acreage). Entry-level lawn riders are suited for 1.5 acres or less and usually have 1-cylinder engines.

Mid-grade riders have twin cylinder engines with high HP’s that work well in large cutting areas.  The forecasted decline is caused by the temporary lull in production of the Craftsman line along with unfavorable mowing conditions (wet spring) and the saturation of new products in the market.

COVID-19 may play a factor in the manufacturing decrease because of plant shutdowns, however production can easily ramp up to meet demand for these seasonal items.  Production is expected increase up to 5% by 2025; lifespan of this product is about 10 years.   PSR

  • DataPoint: 2020 Production Estimate, NA Skid Steer Loaders

105,900 units is the estimate by Power Systems Research of the number of Skid Steer Loaders to be produced in North America (Canada and the United States) in 2020.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: With 35% of total units produced, Bobcat leads in production of Skid Steer Loaders in North America. In second and third positions are Case New Holland and Caterpillar with 22.5% and 14.5%, respectively.

Exports: Collectively, up to 30% worldwide.

Trends: Production of skid steer loaders in North America increased 3% in 2019 over 2018. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was expected to remain flat with a nominal decrease of ½% in 2020.  This decline will be more severe with plant shutdowns etc., due to current virus concerns.  Overall, loader production could plummet up to 40% this year.

As the construction industry recovers, construction will continue to be a key driver in overall industry growth.  Flat sales can be attributed to the American agriculture industry that is sluggish (still battling commodity prices) that accounts for 29% of all skid steer usage in the market today. Expect production of Skid Steer Loaders in North America to increase up to 5% over the next 3-5 years.   PSR

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: With combined plant totals of 47%, Caterpillar leads in production of Wheel Loaders/Dozers in the United States. In second position is Deere with 22%. Third, is Case New Holland with 8%.

Exports: Collectively, up to 35% worldwide

Trends: In 2018, production of Wheel Loaders/Dozers in the United States increased 3.3% over 2017.  The increase in 2018 is attributed to record mining related activities that is also the prime reason for the 2019 decline.  Production in 2019 dropped 3.6% from 2018.  The decline also is attributed to Tier 4 engine regulations and new machine designs that significantly increased machine cost.  To offset this increase, new products deliver greater production and improved profits.

The machines are designed to carry an array of materials for construction, industrial and mining applications. Production is expected to fluctuate over the next 3-5 years based on global economic factors and conditions; we could see a gain up to 5%.   PSR

In 2018, production was 89,509 units, up 3,035 units or 3.5% from 2017.

This information comes from industry interviews and from two proprietary databases maintained by Power Systems Research: EnginLink™ , which provides information on engines, and OE Link™, a database of equipment manufacturers.

Market Share: With combined plant totals of 53.3%, Yamaha leads in production of PWC in North America. In second position is Bombardier (BRP) with 39.5%; third is Kawasaki with 7%. Canadian-based BRP builds its Sea-Doo branded PWCs in Mexico. Tennessee Watercraft produces the jet drive boats for Yamaha.

Exports: Collectively up to 30% worldwide

Trends:  In 2018, production of PWC in NA increased 3.5% over 2017.  Year over Year, production is expected to remain flat, with a slight decrease of 1.3%, in 2019.  Sales of these recreational vehicles depend on disposable income and leisure time. Industry revenue dropped during the recession and is still low; over the next five years continued disposable income growth will bring revenue back to its prerecession level.  Expect the production of Personal Watercraft to gain up to 5% by 2025.   PSR
