India’s commercial vehicle (CV) market showed a clear improvement in August 2026, supported by freight movement, infrastructure activity and replacement demand. The recovery was broad-based, with major manufacturers reporting stronger sales across their commercial vehicle portfolios.

PSR Analysis. The more important development is the strong performance of medium and heavy commercial vehicles. Demand for heavy trucks has improved as freight movement and infrastructure activity support higher vehicle utilization. This also indicates that the recovery is not limited to last-mile or small commercial vehicles.
Replacement demand is another important driver. A large part of India’s truck fleet is ageing, and improving freight activity can encourage fleet operators to replace older vehicles. However, replacement may not always mean replacing like-for-like. Operators are increasingly looking at higher-payload vehicles to carry more freight with a similar fleet size. This can support higher tonnage growth even when unit growth remains moderate.
From a business perspective, this makes payload and freight movement more important than vehicle volumes alone. OEMs with a strong presence in higher-tonnage segments could benefit more as fleet operators upgrade their vehicles. It also creates opportunities for suppliers of engines, transmissions, tires and other components used in heavy trucks.
However, the recent growth should be viewed with some caution. Last year’s CV demand was relatively weak due to uncertainty around GST changes, creating a favorable comparison base. Higher fuel prices and input costs can also affect fleet profitability and new vehicle purchases.
Overall, the August recovery points to improving CV demand, particularly in the heavy-truck segment. The key trend to watch is whether replacement demand leads to higher-payload upgrades, which could make the recovery stronger in terms of freight-carrying capacity than vehicle volumes alone suggest.
