Japanese brands like Kubota and Yanmar maintain a strong market position, but Chinese competitors are increasing their presence. Small-scale farmers consider initial costs, durability, and after-sales service when making purchases. Government policies aimed at modernization are also supporting market growth.

Power Shortages Boost Reliance on Generators
Akihiro Komuro Amid rising demand during the dry season and the risk of power plant outages, concerns are mounting in the Philippines over tight electricity supplies. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has noted that prices on the Wholesale Electricity Supply Market (WESM) could increase by approximately 4 pesos per kWh.
This increase is due to a combination of factors, including high temperatures, the shutdown of some power plants, and rising fuel costs.
These conditions are also causing instability in the power supply at the regional level. For instance, Boracay’s supply capacity has not kept pace with the surge in electricity demand fueled by the tourism recovery, prompting the use of generators in some areas. Although transmission operators aim to avoid power outages through future infrastructure improvements, reliance on backup power sources continues to some extent.

BYD Indonesia EV Plant Nears Production
Akihiro Komuro Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is moving closer to launching local production in Indonesia as construction of its EV assembly plant in Subang, West Java, progresses toward operational readiness. The facility is designed with an annual production capacity of approximately 150,000 vehicles and is currently entering the final preparation stage ahead of full-scale production.
According to reports, the plant has begun trial production and manufacturing line verification as the company prepares for commercial operations. The project represents one of the largest EV manufacturing investments in Indonesia and reflects the country’s efforts to attract electric vehicle production.

2025-Year Motorcycle Sales Rank 2nd in SE Asia
Akihiro Komuro In 2025, the Vietnamese motorcycle market experienced strong growth, with sales increasing by 14.9% year-on-year to approximately 3.4 million units. This made it the second-largest market in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia. Indonesia maintained its top position as the region’s largest market with 6.55 million units sold, though its growth rate was limited to 0.6%. Meanwhile, the Philippines recorded 2.37 million units (+2.8% year-over-year), Thailand recorded 1.73 million units (+9.8% year-over-year), and Malaysia recorded 613,893 units (+3.5% year-over-year).
In Vietnam, the rapid expansion of electric motorcycles is reshaping the market structure. Alongside domestic companies, Chinese firms are accelerating investment in electric motorcycles, aided by stricter environmental regulations. Hanoi’s plan to restrict internal combustion engine vehicles starting in mid-2026 is further accelerating the shift towards electric vehicles.

India–Indonesia Auto Relationship Gains Strength
Aditya Kondejkar The evolving automotive relationship between India and Indonesia is increasingly defined by structured, government-linked procurement and industrial collaboration rather than routine export activity. Recent transactions involving Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Ashok Leyland signal a measurable expansion of India’s commercial vehicle footprint in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
Indonesia’s infrastructure expansion, rural logistics formalization, and cooperative-based distribution programs have generated concentrated demand for light and medium commercial vehicles. Unlike fragmented retail-driven sales, these programs are characterized by bulk institutional procurement, creating predictable order pipelines and scale efficiencies for suppliers. Indian manufacturers, with established competencies in cost-optimized, durable vehicle platforms suited to emerging market operating conditions, have been able to secure sizeable allocations.

Construction Machinery Demand Could Hit 25,000 Units
Akihiro Komuro The Indonesian Heavy Equipment Distributors Association (PAABI) forecasts an expansion in construction machinery demand in 2026, with a potential total of 23,000 to 25,000 units. This represents an estimated growth of 5% to 8% compared to 2025, with a projected total market size of around US$3.62 billion.
According to the PAABI Chairman, the increase in demand in 2026 will be driven by the nation’s Strategic Infrastructure Projects (PSN), the ongoing construction of the new capital, IKN, and mining activities at major nickel and coal sites. These projects are expected to increase demand for heavy machinery, such as hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, and bulldozers.

Heli Breaks Ground for Factory in Thailand
Jack Hao Heli Industrial Vehicles (Thailand) Co., Ltd.’s broke ground for its industrial vehicle assembly and lithium battery pack production factory at the Navaan Nong Khuang Industrial Park in Chonburi Province, Thailand Nov. 27, 2025.
To consolidate and expand its leading position in the global market, actively advance its global strategic layout, and build a global production and supply system, Anhui Heli Co., Ltd. has established a strategic partnership with Siam Motors Parts Co., Ltd., a local Thai enterprise, to jointly establish Heli Industrial Vehicles (Thailand) Co., Ltd.
Through this joint venture, the two parties will co-invest in building a new manufacturing base in Thailand, creating an integrated production and sales platform for industrial vehicle complete machines and lithium battery systems.

EV Motorcycle Market Rapidly Expanding
According to statistics from the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM) and other motorcycle data, gasoline motorcycle sales are slowing while electric two-wheelers are expanding rapidly. In the third quarter of 2025, the five VAMM member companies (Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, Suzuki, and SYM) sold a total of 620,000 units, which is a 9.37% decrease compared to the same period last year. Cumulative sales from January to September remained nearly flat compared to 2024, totaling 1.91 million units.

China’s LiuGong To Invest in Factory in West Java
INDONESIA REPORT
Akihiro Komuro In October 2025, LiuGong Indonesia, the Indonesian subsidiary of the Chinese construction machinery manufacturer LiuGong, signed a memorandum of understanding regarding its investment plan for an industrial zone. The new factory in Karawang, which is expected to begin operations in 2026, will have an annual production capacity of 5,000 units and will require a total investment of $317 million. The factory will incorporate AGVs, MES and a dedicated R&D center for electric construction machinery, advancing the adoption of advanced technologies.
Through partnerships with local suppliers, the company aims to increase its TKDN (local content requirement) and achieve certification within five years. Products will be exported to the domestic market, as well as to Southeast Asia, Australia and North America, with an expected annual foreign exchange earnings effect of $40 million. LiuGong views this investment as a contribution to strengthening Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry ecosystem and supporting sustainable development.
