The global economy is on a healthy rebound trend, but issues with supply chain, logistics and the re-surgency of COVID-19 during Q3 2021 remained. Power Systems Research witnessed a strong economic recovery globally in H1 2021; however, many challenges still remain. The rebound will continue to vary widely among different regions/countries, but a complete recovery is not expected until the global pandemic is under control. With some minor changes among regions and market segments globally, our overall forecast from last quarter remains in place, and that is good news to our industry players, OEMs, powertrain, and component suppliers.
The global economic performance last quarter was in line with our initial projections from earlier this year. As we projected last quarter, we did not expect any rapid economic recovery in H2 2021, however, we continued to witness a steady increase in economic activities. During the last quarter of 2021 Power Systems Research expects this trend to remain in place.
Government support in the form of fiscal policies and public health management are driving the economic rebound and largely explain variations in performance across countries. With the targeted monetary support to consumers and certain industries, the demand for products and services globally is coming back, and we expect this trend to carry over into Q1 2022.
Ford Motor Co’s unexpected decision to retain its factory in Tamil Nadu and its potential plans for the assembly of the latest Endeavour signals a potential shift in strategy towards a stronger focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and leveraging India as an export hub.
This analysis delves into the implications of Ford’s potential emphasis on EVs and its ability to capitalize on India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for exports.
Globally, under its current CEO, Jim Farley, Ford is focused on the electrification and digital transformation of core segments in which it is a leader, namely trucks, SUVs, commercial vehicles, and performance cars.
Yosyf Sheremeta, PhD, Dir. of Prod. Mgt. & Customer Experience, analyzes the North American economic outlook with special emphasis on the Administration’s efforts to control emissions.

“India is a key market for vehicle electrification, particularly due to the government’s carbon neutrality goals, which makes securing cost competitiveness through localized battery production crucial,” Heui Won Yang, president and head of Hyundai Motor and Kia’s research and development division.
SUMMARY. There are several factors that could contribute to modest growth in the second half of this year as we await final numbers for the quarter. This should lead to total production globally growing at +2.6% in 2023 (vs 2022). Given this 2023 growth, the outlook for the years into 2028 remains positive.
Apart from Russia and Ukraine, the main country to show a decline is South Korea, while Japan is barely positive. However, the segment picture shows some differences.
Fuel prices have eased recently, but they remain a serious concern.
Supply chains remain constrained.
The war in Ukraine shows no sign of a speedy conclusion, despite recent successes by Ukraine.
Ukrainian exports of wheat, other grains and fertilizer continue but are still low compared to pre-war levels.
Inflation continues to be a concern and central banks are raising their interest rates. This will pose a risk to economic growth in all regions. Inflation and price increases are putting OEMs in a tricky situation.
Risk of recession appears in several countries including the USA and Germany.
Covid is still lingering with global deaths now at over 6.9 million, but the death rate has slowed considerably.
Latent demand for machinery keeps bursting out into the open.
