Union Budget Push To Expand Highways and EVs

New Russian 653hp Engine for Grain Combines

Tutaev Motor Plant has completed creation of 18.5 liter 8 cylinder Vee diesel engine TMZ-8807.10 with two turbochargers, electronic operation system and iron cast cylinder block heads. The powertrain pushes out 653 hp and is a part of new engine family, the TMZ-880. The development of the TMZ-880 family was started in 2016.

The new engine will be tested on the AG combine Palesse KVK-8060 made in the Belorussian Gomselmash plant in 2022. It will replace the German Mercedes OM-502LA. Decisions about mass production will be made, depending on test results

Brazil Cuts Taxes on Production of Several Segments

Taxes on Industrialized Products (IPI) will be reduced by 25% for most of industrialized goods, in a Governmental effort to boost Industry production. The total impact in federal revenue will be US$ 5 billion in 2022.

Outdoor Power Equipment To Grow 5.3%

Power Systems Research (PSR) projects the global outdoor power equipment market to grow from $34.01 billion in 2021 to $48.91 billion by 2028, a CAGR of 5.34% over the forecast period. The outdoor power equipment market includes consumer and commercial lawn mowers, chain saws, leaf blowers, and other motorized equipment used in the upkeep of lawn and gardens.

Global trends.North America is expected to dominate the market because of the growth of commercial and residential lawns and parks. The market in North America stood at $13.7 billion in 2021 and is expected to gain a huge portion of the global market share.

In Europe, continued automation in the lawn mower segment will increase demand for automated residential lawn mowers.

Toyota Launches India’s First Flex Fuel Hybrid

Toyota has launched  the Corolla Altis, India’s first flex-fuel engine. This car will be able to run on petrol or ethanol as well as electric power. It is part of a pilot project developing Flexi-Fuel Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles in India.

Because of the great diversity in India’s consumer population, especially its per-capita income disparity, and multiple applications of vehicles, India might not use one technology but might use a combination of technologies involving various fuel types.

The Indian market can’t simply shift from petrol/ diesel engines to EVs over the next few years. Hence, many OEMs are working on CNG/ hydrogen/ hybrid vehicles.  Toyota has launched this new vehicle for the Indian market as part of these efforts.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck News

During the past few years there has been plenty of talk about battery electric power replacing diesel-powered internal combustion engines in commercial trucks.  At some point this might be true for short and regional haul freight carriers, but what about the long-haul heavy truck segment? 

Currently, the lack of a sufficient charging infrastructure, range anxiety and the extreme weights associated with the batteries are significant deterrents to mass adoption of long-haul battery electric trucks.  However, hydrogen fuel cell trucks for long-haul applications appear to be a viable option in this segment.  Even though fuel cell trucks currently have a greater range and lighter weight than battery electric trucks, they have the same problem as electric trucks: a lack of refueling infrastructure.

Penn State Offers Smaller, Faster Charging Batteries

Researchers at Penn State say they have found a way to make batteries for electric cars that can be smaller and faster charging.

“The need for smaller, faster-charging batteries is greater than ever,” said Chao-Yang Wang, the lead author of the research study that was published in the October 12 issue of the journal Nature. “Our fast-charging technology works for most energy dense batteries and will open a new possibility to downsize electric vehicle batteries from 150 to 50 kWh without causing drivers to feel range anxiety,” said Wang.

Batteries operate most efficiently when they are hot, but not too hot. Keeping batteries consistently at just the right temperature has been a major challenge for battery engineers. Historically, they have relied on external, bulky heating and cooling systems to regulate battery temperature, but they respond slowly and waste a lot of energy. The team decided to regulate the temperature from inside the battery. The researchers developed a new battery structure that adds an ultrathin nickel foil as the fourth component besides the anode, electrolyte, and cathode. The nickel foil self-regulates the battery’s temperature and reactivity which allows for 10 minute fast charging on just about any EV battery.

Lithium-Air Battery Could Offer Longer Range

Most owners of electric cars have wished for a battery pack that could power their vehicle for more than a thousand miles on a single charge, and Range Anxiety is a big issue for EV adoption. Researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have developed a lithium-air battery that could make that dream a reality.

The main new component in this lithium-air battery is a solid electrolyte instead of the usual liquid variety. Batteries with solid electrolytes are not subject to the safety issues of liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion and other battery types, which can overheat and catch fire.
