Hydrogen Engines Cheaper than Diesel?
As companies seek to decarbonize their truck fleets, Ryze Hydrogen says that hydrogen combustion engines are the way to go– they are cleaner than diesel and they also make more economic sense, according to the company. Many companies today are looking at fuel cells in order to be able to use H2 as a clean fuel, but there is a growing movement toward the use of hydrogen combustion engines.
Cummins and Westpoint are cited as examples, with Cummins having unveiled a medium-duty concept truck using an H2-fueled internal combustion engine (ICE), which drew substantial attention in Germany at the IAA Transportation exhibition. Australian Solar Park Could Generate Hydrogen for Less Than $2/kg
Frontier Energy conducted a pre-feasibility study (PFS) at its Bristol Springs Solar project in Australia to show that it has the potential to be a low-cost green hydrogen producer, with power sourced from the company’s planned first stage 114 MW DC solar farm. BMW Focuses on Hydrogen Fuel-cell EVs

Brazilian Marcopolo Launches H2 Bus in Australia

Fabio Ferraresi Brazilian-based Marcopolo has expanded its product line of renewable and zero-emission fuels. Volgren, a company owned by the Brazilian manufacturer, is Australia’s largest bus producer. It has signed an agreement with Wrightbus, an Irish bus manufacturer, and market leader with Hydrogen technology in Europe, to develop and launch hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses for the Australian market.

Volvo CE Pushing Alternative Powertrains

Emiliano Marzoli Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has started testing its prototype “HX04” Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Articulated truck. Carolina Diez Ferrer, Head of Advanced Engineering Programs at Volvo CE expects that this prototype will “give valuable insights into the opportunities of hydrogen in the energy transformation alongside battery-electric solutions.”
The on-going development of the hauler began in 2018 and experienced partnerships with different Swedish institutions and companies. Fun fact: The machine is nicknamed “Electric Charlie,” a homage to “Gravel Charlie,” the world’s first Articulated hauler produced by Volvo in 1966.
Shell has been involved in the project, supplying the Hydrogen refuelling station for Volvo’s test track. The Volvo HX04 is charged with 12 kg hydrogen in about 7.5 minutes, enabling it to operate for approximately four hours. Fuel cells work by combining hydrogen with oxygen and the resulting chemical reaction produces electricity which powers the machine.

Cummins Develops Hydrogen-Powered Engines

Chris Fisher Cummins, Inc., is working to develop hydrogen-powered engines, using approaches for Hydrogen combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells.
Both hydrogen engines and hydrogen fuel cells are better suited for long haul and many regional-haul truck applications than pure battery electric vehicles.
In North America, Cummins plans to introduce hydrogen internal combustion engines across their existing engine platforms starting in 2024.

Bosch Qingling Builds Hydrogen Fuel Cell Plant
CHINA REPORT

Jack Hao Bosch Qingling has begun construction on Bosch’s first R & D Center for hydrogen fuel production in the world, a national hydrogen fuel cell engine production base and a national hydrogen energy commercial vehicle production base.
The hydrogen fuel cell engine project is being built jointly by Bosch (China) Investment Co., Ltd. and Qingling Group, with a total investment of about US$ 470 million (2.98 billion yuan).
Bosch predicts that by 2030, about 12.5% of new commercial vehicles in the world will be powered by fuel cell vehicles. In order to further promote the industrialization of hydrogen power in China, Bosch began to lay out the construction of a new plant in. At present, it has completed the preparations such as overall planning and design, and officially started construction today.
