With 25,000 units shipped in January 2021, exports of vehicles grow 21.9 % compared with January 2020 and 24.2% compared with December 2020.  The volume surprised ANFAVEA, which was expecting worse numbers because of the effects of the pandemic in the South American Countries, traditional destinations for Brazilian vehicle exports.

PSR Analysis: This result is positive compared to our initial forecast of a slow recovery of South American countries. On the other hand, the production in countries such as Argentina and Colombia has been affected by a shortage of raw materials, creating an opportunity for imports from Brazil in these countries, even with lower demand.    PSR

Edge Computing Brings Data Closer To Home

John Krzesicki
John Krzesicki

It’s often said that there’s nothing new under the sun, only new ways of doing old things. That may be especially true in how we handle data.

Ever since Power Systems Research began tracking global production of engines and powertrains in 1976, its analysts have been alert to new trends surrounding power and data movement.

Today, as three essential metrics in data handling change— cloud costs, volume and processing time—, the structure of data networks also is changing. In many cases, it’s not practical to send vast amounts of data to the cloud to be processed and then wait for the results. Now, it’s often necessary to have smaller data centers located near the activity, at the edge of the action, if you will.

Goods Transported in Brazil Increases in 2021

PSR Analysis: This result is aligned with what we see in the sales of new trucks and trailers and confirms our increase in FY 2021 sales and production. Part of the increase is due to inflation in local currency, but part is due to good results in Agribusiness and Mining. Other segments of the economy have had a lower increase because of COVID19 if compared with 2020, when the uncertainty in March and April had a higher impact than in 2021. PSR

PSR Analysis: It looks like the perfect match as it is a good opportunity for the German car maker to sell the assets of the plant stopped in 2020 and it is in line with the Chinese OEM strategy to expand business out of China by the acquisition of existing companies or production structures. GWM did it in Thailand when it acquired the plant of General Motors and it plans to do it again in India, again with General Motors. PSR

PSR Analysis: The investment is a sign of the presence of Hydrogen to power MHV and Off Highway equipment, either for ICE, solely or combined with Diesel or other fuel, or for Fuel Cells. Another step necessary for the success of Hydrogen as a fuel for MHV and Off Highway equipment in Brazil is the infrastructure for distribution; that should come along with the success of the production plants. Honda Staff Seek Early Retirement Amid EV Shift

Over 2,000 employees at Honda Motor have applied for early retirement, as the Japanese automaker restructures its workforce to gear up to make more electric vehicles.

Honda’s move is the latest in the trend among automakers to move away from the production and sales of internal combustion engines. Those employees account for around 5% of Honda’s full-time staff in Japan. Although Honda had not set a target, the number of applications has far exceeded its initial estimate of 1,000.

It has a Diesel ICE working as an electric power generator and independent electric drives in the four wheels of the equipment. Christopher Bamforth

Volvo Group and SSAB have unveiled an autonomous loader made of fossil-free steel, claimed to be the world’s first vehicle made from that material. Manufactured at Volvo Construction Equipment’s facility in Braås, Sweden, this is said to be “just the start” as a few more will be produced in 2022 with mass production set to follow.

This machine is a load carrier for use in mining and quarrying and is built using a new fossil-free steel from SSAB. Volvo’s CEO Martin Lundstedt has already said that this new machine is a first step in incorporating this new steel in all of their products and components to help reach their goal of being completely carbon neutral by 2040.

Along with the electrification of its vehicles and machines, Volvo adds that it is determined to reduce the carbon footprint of its entire supply chain and this latest innovation is one step forward on this path.
