Cummins plans to introduce their agnostic ICE engine platforms with testing to begin in 2024 and series production to start in the 2026/2027 timeframe. The engine platforms use a common base engine. Below the head gasket the engines will mostly have similar components and above the head gasket the engine will have different components for different fuel types. The new platforms will include the B6.7, X10 and the X15 engines. The X10 will ultimately supersede the current L9 and X12 engine platforms.
In North America, Cummins plans to introduce the agnostic engine platforms starting in 2026. Diesel and natural gas will be the first fuel types introduced and hydrogen versions will soon follow.
Cummins Brazil has announced the introduction of the new QSF 4.5 engine, boasting 210 horsepower at 2300 revolutions per minute (rpm), specifically tailored for the Off-Highway segment.
This 4-cylinder engine represents the pinnacle of power density in the Brazilian market. Start of production at the Guarulhos plant is scheduled to begin this April. The QSF 4.5 is a homegrown project designed by Brazilian engineers to cater to domestic market demands. It is derived from the F 4.5 engine used in the automotive sector by Cummins.
Most owners of electric cars have wished for a battery pack that could power their vehicle for more than a thousand miles on a single charge, and Range Anxiety is a big issue for EV adoption. Researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have developed a lithium-air battery that could make that dream a reality.
The main new component in this lithium-air battery is a solid electrolyte instead of the usual liquid variety. Batteries with solid electrolytes are not subject to the safety issues of liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion and other battery types, which can overheat and catch fire.
On Monday, Nov. 30, 2020, at 9:00 am CST, representatives of two leading international firms will present a free one-hour webinar discussing the construction outlook in Europe and North and South America.
During the session, Power Systems Research and JCB Power Systems will present the latest information on the impact of COVID-19 on construction equipment production. JCB will provide details on emissions in developing engine technologies that are coming to market across the globe.
Cummins, Inc., is working to develop hydrogen-powered engines, using approaches for Hydrogen combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells.
Both hydrogen engines and hydrogen fuel cells are better suited for long haul and many regional-haul truck applications than pure battery electric vehicles.
In North America, Cummins plans to introduce hydrogen internal combustion engines across their existing engine platforms starting in 2024.
Cummins has announced that in addition to the recent investments it has made in its Fridley, Minn., plant, it will also invest more than $1 billion across its US engine manufacturing network in an effort to support the transition into hydrogen fuel.
The investments are being made in Indiana, North Carolina and New York. The $1 billion is intended to provide an upgrade of facilities supporting the first “fuel-agnostic” engine platforms in the industry. The fuel-agnostic concept refers specifically engines that can use different types of fuel, especially a variety of low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels.
In November, Volkswagen’s TRATON group and Navistar announced a merger agreement in which TRATON will acquire all outstanding shares of Navistar. Previously, TRATON held 16.7% of Navistar’s common shares. The deal is valued at $3.7 billion and is expected to be finalized in mid-2021.
Navistar has been in collaboration with TRATON’s brand MAN for a number of years, primarily with regard to engine development. PSR believes additional engine offerings will be one of the primary goals to improve profitability and long-term market share improvement within the class 8 truck segment.
Beijing Foton Motors and Cummins said they will further strengthen their strategic cooperation in the Southeast Asian region and sign a joint investment agreement with the Foton Cummins Thailand engine factory to provide powertrains for the Foton Zhengda vehicle base and Southeast Asian business.
This signing would mark a further strategic cooperation between Foton Motors and Cummins, targeting a wider range of regional markets and providing more diversified power solutions to global customers.
As a global emerging economy, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) has become one of the regions with the greatest development potential in the world. In recent years, Foton Motors has had significant business expansion in Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Their market share has gradually increased in trucks, buses, and other specialized vehicles, and they have built their reputation in the local market.
The symposium of battery change mode for new energy vehicle was held June 15 in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. Data from National Big Data Alliance of New Energy Vehicles suggests that over 3 million new energy vehicles were in the system in 2019 and 900,000 vehicles are running daily. Data also suggest that new energy vehicle GVW range primarily falls under 4.5 tons.
PSR Analysis: Many numbers are in the article, some contradictory. As one of the truck OEMs, XCMG does make some excellent points on the daily use of the battery-powered vehicle, using data collected from end-users, such as working hours, range anxiety and surprisingly, maintenance and downtime.
But I want to point out one potential issue that might travel under the radar: operating cost, more specifically, fuel cost. For large fleet owners like JD.com Inc. or SF Express, fuel cost might be a key factor in choosing a battery-powered vehicle over ICE-powered vehicle for urban delivery.
There are energy companies already working with large industrial businesses to install wind or solar power onsite to address their electricity bill issue. Once completed, giant companies like JD or SF Express will significantly cut down their operating expenses on fuel, in this case, electricity.
There is one game changer out there now. How will ICE-powered light duty trucks compete with battery-powered vehicles, when the latter runs free of charge and free of emission? What will happen to all the components suppliers for light duty trucks, especially urban delivery trucks? PSR
