The February issue of the Alternative Power Report produced by Power Systems Research contains articles on China battery production and Chinese EV market share gains in Thailand. There’s also news about CATL’s wind power project and several articles about EV heavy truck development.
According to Power Systems Research intelligence, the global powersports market size was valued at $31.41 billion in 2023, and is projected to reach $53.64 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 6.1% from 2023 to 2032.
Power Systems Research is a Minnesota-based research firm that has been tracking global production of power equipment since 1976.
The recreational powersports segment represents activities ranging from off-roading, motocross, and all-terrain and side-by-side vehicle riding to on-road motorcycling and enjoying water equipment such as pontoon boats and jet skis.
Daimler’s GenH2 hydrogen trucks, powered by liquid hydrogen for an electric motor, are set to hit German roads in 2024. These trucks, boasting a hauling capacity of about 25 tons for over 1,000 kilometers on a full tank, integrate a propulsion system delivering 300 kilowatts, supplemented by a battery for an additional 400 kilowatts during high-demand situations like hill climbs. This initiative represents a collaborative effort with Air Liquide and Linde for H2 refueling services, leveraging advanced storage technology for higher energy density and operational efficiency. PSR
The technology involved in using H2 as an energy source can be costly for several reasons. Their use is considered to have zero-carbon operations but only when green H2 is used, meaning that it is produced using processes powered by renewable energy such as wind and solar. That said, the most common production method currently used involves burning natural gas, a fossil fuel.
Hydrogen has the potential to be emissions free but only if we understand how the hydrogen is generated / manufactured or whether it occurs naturally. Several new terms have been used recently in the press, and this article explains them.
Gold hydrogen refers to naturally occurring deposits of the gas trapped underground in a way similar to how natural gas and oil deposits are found under the Earth’s surface. This type of H2 is different from White in that White now typically refers to the gas when it is above the surface, such as in the atmosphere, but Gold refers specifically to the gas found in underground deposits.
Despite lithium ion battery prices continuing to fall, interest in sodium ion (Na-ion) energy storage has not waned. Sodium ion batteries are undergoing a critical period of commercialization as industries from automotive to energy storage bet big on the technology. Sodium ion looks well placed, with superior safety, raw material costs, and environmental credentials.
Sodium ion cells, produced at scale, could be 20% to 30% cheaper than the dominant stationary storage battery technology, lithium ferro/iron-phosphate (LFP), primarily due to abundant sodium and low extraction and purification costs. Sodium ion batteries can use aluminum for the anode current collector instead of copper, which is used in lithium ion batteries, further reducing costs and supply chain risks.
