Thuy Trinh Nguyen Wins $2,000 Scholarship from Power Systems Research

Thuy Trinh Nguyen, a senior at Eagan High School, Eagan, Minnesota, is the recipient of the 2021 Power Systems Research $2,000 academic scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be attending a four-year college with a career objective in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.

She will use the scholarship to study biology and sociology (Pre-Med) at Harvard College.

“My favorite subject,” says Thuy, “is AP Physics–it not only taught me how to calculate my initial velocity, but also helps me recognize the fundamentals of life. Everything is organized with a plan.”

Thuy’s favorite pastime is shopping for the best deals at the Mall of America, and never being tired of shopping. (“Sorry, Dad!”) She also enjoys watching One Direction music videos and crocheting.

Her favorite high school memory: “After the Chemistry finals for Trimester 2, Mr. Elliott somehow allowed me to make ramen in his class. It certainly made up for the headache I got from balancing chemical equations.”

This year, 112 students will receive scholarships totaling $129,950 through the program.

Power Systems Research has been supporting high school science and engineering programs for many years. It has been donating to the Eagan Foundation Scholarship program since 2013.

Another program PSR funds is the Experimental Vehicle Team at St. Thomas Academy in suburban St. Paul, Minnesota. The school successfully competes in international competitions with high schools and universities to build the most energy efficient vehicles. PSR

Japan Could Miss Out on Southeast Asia’s Shift To EVs

Competition in the development of EVs is fierce, and the momentum for their introduction is growing in Southeast Asia. While Chinese and Korean manufacturers are aggressively entering the market, Japanese manufacturers, which hold an 80% share of the new car market, have not made any significant moves.

Although the COVID-19 disaster has brought the market to a standstill, Southeast Asia, with a population of 660 million and a rising middle class, will continue to be a promising growth market.

A proactive EV strategy is required to protect the current market dominance. In Indonesia and Thailand, the two largest markets in the region, Japanese cars have a 90% share of the market. However, it is only the Chinese and South Koreans who are providing the buzz about EVs.

In Indonesia, South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. will begin producing EVs in March at its completed vehicle plant that recently went into operation. For the time being, it will rely on imports for key components, but it is building a plant for mass production of onboard batteries in collaboration with LG Group, another Korean electronics giant.

In Thailand, China’s SAIC Motor Group and Great Wall Motor have already started selling EVs. The latter plans to start mass production of EVs in 2023 at a plant it acquired from GM in the US. Compared to China and South Korea, which are trying to secure a scale of production with an eye to exports, Japan is generally cautious, with Toyota and Mitsubishi considering local production of EVs in Thailand starting in 2023.

Based on the capacity of EV-equipped batteries sold in January 2020, the three largest Korean battery companies (LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SK Innovation) have a combined share of 30.8%, exceeding 30% for the first time. In the ranking of total power consumption of EV batteries, China’s CATL is in the top place for the third consecutive year, LG Chem is in third place, Samsung SDI is in fifth place, and SK Innovation is in tenth place. For the first time, SK Innovation has joined the Top 10.

Bosch Qingling Builds Hydrogen Fuel Cell Plant

Bosch Qingling has begun construction on Bosch’s first R & D Center for hydrogen fuel production in the world, a national hydrogen fuel cell engine production base and a national hydrogen energy commercial vehicle production base.

The hydrogen fuel cell engine project is being built jointly by Bosch (China) Investment Co., Ltd. and Qingling Group, with a total investment of about US$ 470 million (2.98 billion yuan).

Bosch predicts that by 2030, about 12.5% of new commercial vehicles in the world will be powered by fuel cell vehicles. In order to further promote the industrialization of hydrogen power in China, Bosch began to lay out the construction of a new plant in. At present, it has completed the preparations such as overall planning and design, and officially started construction today.

VinFast Partners with Chinese Company To Make EV Batteries

SOUTHEAST ASIA: VIETNAM REPORT

Automaker VinFast is partnering with China’s Gotion High-Tech to research and produce batteries for electric vehicles as part of its vision to become a global brand.

According to a statement released by Vingroup, VinFast’s parent company, the two companies are planning to build Vietnam’s first lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant. LFP is an iron-based battery that does not rely on rare raw materials such as cobalt or nickel. That makes LFP batteries much cheaper, although they have lower energy density than nickel-based chemistries.

According to Vingroup, Gotion is the leading manufacturer of LFP batteries in China, with eight research and development centers worldwide and 10 manufacturing facilities in China. Thai Thi Thanh Hai, vice chairman of Vingroup, said the partnership is key to VinFast’s ability to achieve supply chain autonomy.

Tesla Proposes Investment in Indonesia to Promote EV Industry

The Indonesian government announced on Feb. 5 that it had received an investment proposal from Tesla. The country is the world’s largest producer of nickel, which is essential for the production of batteries for EVs. In order to promote the EV and battery related industries, Indonesia had invited Tesla to invest in the country.

Details of the talks between Indonesia and Tesla cannot be disclosed due to confidentiality agreements, but it is said that they have mainly discussed battery and energy storage solutions. The Indonesian vice-minister said, “If Tesla only wants to buy raw materials, we are not interested. The proposal is more than the procurement of raw materials and extends to energy storage systems such as MegaPack, PowerPack and Powerwall,” he said.

During its event, Tesla unveiled plans to develop a “million mile” battery that could last an electric car’s entire lifetime on the road. It also outlined plans to dramatically reduce the cost of its battery cells and packs to $100 per kilowatt-hour, at which point experts believe electric cars will become comparable in price to combustion engine vehicles.

Bill Gates-backed QuantumScape, the first US battery company to go public in a decade, announced that it has overcome two major hurdles to create an all-metal lithium battery, which, if true, would allow electric vehicles to go up to 50% further on a single charge. Those hurdles were metallic lithium’s propensity to explode when it comes into contact with liquid and its needle structure that has historically punctured plastic separators between electrodes and caused shorts.
